Old Navy Test Site

Wolfeboro

The Old Navy Test Site reveals a unique story. Apparently in the 1950s, the Navy did some covert laser tests underwater in Lake Winnipesaukee. A rail car that ran on a track, like a coal-mining rail car, was used to measure how fast the laser beams were traveling through water per Dive Winnipesaukee. A tower that was part of the rail track operation remains intact in 45 feet of water. A few pieces of the rail car track can also be found laying on the bottom.

At this site, there is also a small fiberglass wreck called the "Empty Pockets Wreck", about 30ft in length that lays in 55ft of water. Dive Winnipesaukee reports that she sank in the 1970s. This wreck can be visited along with seeing the tower mentioned above during the same dive.

Note, that Lake Winnipesaukee is very silty. We recommend frog kicks only on all dives in the lake
