Kim’s experience with the ocean began early with trips to the beach and aquariums, boat trips with her family and was SCUBA certified at the age of 13.
Kim received her BS in Marine Biology from the University of New England. After graduating in 2011, she was certified as a Divemaster and she spent the subsequent two summers as an instructor for Underwater Explorers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium taking kids 8-13 surface scuba diving. While at the Aquarium, Kim interned with the Dive Office and learned to manage scientific divers, repair/maintain gear, and was certified as an AAUS scientific diver. Kim returned from CA and became a NAUI instructor, SSI Instructor and a DAN Instructor. She has been working at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) since 2014 helping to manage their scientific diving program. During this time, Kim came on with East Coast Divers the summer of 2015 as the Training Director and has continued consulting with the shop as the Director of Special Projects. Kim also finished her master’s degree in Sustainability and Environmental Management through the Harvard University Extension Program in 2018.
Kim was named the 2008 Boston Sea Rover Frank Scalli Intern, and in 2017 started as the Vice President of the Boston Sea Rovers. This past January 2024, she was named the WHOI Diving Safety Officer as the first female and fourth ever in the institution’s history. She was also recently named President of Boston Sea Rovers, the first ever female President of BSR.
Kim has continued to be a true leader for the 30+ dive professionals at East Coast divers and the 50+ active science divers at WHOI. Kim actively trains new students, developing divers, and dive professionals. A huge congratulations, Kim Malkoski, for all that you do for the New England scuba diving community and for all your recent milestones!
